James just moved from B.C. to a school in Ontario. As a grade 8 student, moving half way through a school year, he's having a hard time adjusting to all this change. He feels the reasons for his move are private, and he's not comfortable discussing them with anyone, but people keep asking about it. He feels like after the first two weeks in his new class he doesn't want to be friends with anyone. His teacher, along with the work being assigned, seems so different from what he was doing out west. James is becoming very stressed out. Just recently, he verbally abused his bus driver on his way to school and was given a suspension.
- Highlights some of the key information in the story, in your own words. (What are the issues?)
- Give an example of at least one strategy James could begin to use that you think would help with his mental health.
- Include a question that a classmate could answer that relates to this topic and/or specific example.
1. James has recently moved to a new home in a new district, he is finding troubles adjusting to his new location. He doesn't feel that he should tell people at school why they moved halfway through the school year. People are pressuring him to tell why, but he doesn't want to. When people are pressuring him he doesn't like it so he doesn't like having anything to do with him. The transition from western Canada to eastern Canada is a big change and he isn't flowing with these changes. James got himself into trouble because of his stress.
2. I think James could try telling his classmates why he moved instead of keeping it to himself because it is safer to be honest rather than building up stress. He could also try talking to his teacher about the problems he is having adjusting to this new town and his teacher will most likely understand what he is going through and try to be 'easy' on him. I also think James could try talking to his parents about his problems instead of keeping it to himself because it is easier to let things out than cause more stress by keeping it to yourself.
3. What does it mean to have mental illnesses?
What do you think at least four of James' troubles are adjusting to Ontario?
Why do you think James doesn't want to have anything to do with his peers in Ontario?
For this chapter, we were tasked to ask questions about these couple of chapters and answer them.
Question 1: What pain do you think Jonas would have to go through and why??
Answer: Jonas would have to go through many different types of pain because he would have to receive the memories of the generations before him. In the generations before sameness, people felt more pain than they do now. He would have to go through pain from death, to a minor cold. Some pain would be worse than others and Jonas would have a difficult time going through it.
Question 2: What do you think Jonas thinks about his new job?
Answer: He either really likes it, or hates it. Jonas would enjoy his job because he gets to receive the memories, from the generations before him, that no one else gets to see. He would hate it because he has to feel the pain that nobody can understand. He would also hate it because he’s not allowed to tell anybody anything, or else he will be released.
For this assignment we were told to create a letter that would be sent to one of the characters of our choice from Orbiting Jupiter from Joseph.
I wanted to write you just to say thank you for being my friend over the tough time I have been going through with Madison and Jupiter. When I first met you I didn’t trust you or anybody but it is because of you that I feel more safe around my foster family and my peers. I just want to write about some great times we have had over the last few months. Do you remember that time we threw snowballs at each other and piled each other with snow? I am very grateful that it happened because it was a good bonding time for us to get to know each other and become family. Do you remember when we stopped at first congressional and I threw a rock at the church bell? And then you missed horribly but it was good that you missed because it gave us memories that we will keep forever. Also the time when I first walked into your barn and you found me Rosy? I actually enjoyed being in your barn and around your family, even though I acted differently. I wanted to write about those times because they were very important to me and I will not forget them. I would also like to thank you for sticking up for me when Mr. Canton was saying bad things about me but you stuck to my side and ignored Mr. Canton, also when you ignored when he kept trying to convince you that I was a bad person. Right now as you may know I am in New Brunswick searching for my daughter, Jupiter. I am looking for Jupiter because she is a part of my family and she is the closest connection I possibly have to Madison. Once I find Jupiter I will be the happiest person that has ever lived, I will bring her back to our family and we shall raise her with the love and care that our family has. But until then I need you to take care of your family and watch over them just how you watched over me. I will be thinking of you everyday I live and I will always remember these moments that I just wrote to you about, take care Jackie.
See you soon, Joseph
If I was tasked with the job of giving Orbiting Jupiter a soundtrack the songs I would choose would be, Don’t Let Me Down by the Chainsmokers, The Beast by Tech N9ne and Sad Song by We The Kings.
I would make my first song choice Don’t Let Me Down by The Chainsmokers because the lyrics have a connection to the novel and the song is good for several parts of the movie. I think the song Don’t Let Me Down has a connection to the novel Orbiting Jupiter because of the lyrics in the song. The main lyrics that I am trying to point out are
“I need you right now so don't let me, don't let me, don't let me down I think I'm losing my mind now it's in my head, darling I hope that you'll be here, when I need you the most so don't let me, don't let me, don't let me down”. One of the sentences in the chorus “It’s in my head, darling I hope that you’ll be here when I need you the most” this relates to the book how Joseph keeps hoping to find his daughter Jupiter eventually. Another lyric that relates to the book Orbiting Jupiter from the song Don’t Let Me Down is “Stranded, reaching out I call your name but you're not around I say your name but you're not around” I think these lyrics relate to the book Orbiting Jupiter because Joseph wants Madeline his “girlfriend” back and he was looking for her until he found out she was dead. This is why I think the song Don’t Let Me Down by the Chainsmokers is a great choice for the soundtrack of the book / future movie of Orbiting Jupiter. My second song I would choose for the soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter would be The Beast by Tech N9ne. I think the song The Beast would match the novel Orbiting Jupiter because it would go well with the scene in chapter two when Joseph impressed his classmates and teacher Coach Swieteck in gym class when he showed his skills in athleticism when he did the uneven bars without any trouble and he climbed the rope quicker than Coach Swieteck while only using his arms. Also this song is more of an intense song that gets your adrenaline going, that specific part in the novel is an intense part because of all of these amazing things Joseph was doing. Another reason I would choose the song The Beast as one of my songs is because some of the lyrics match the occasions in the novel. Some of the lyrics in the song The Beast repetitively are “Cause i’m a beast” Joseph was going “Beast Mode” (On fire when he was showing his athletic skills when it was gym class). I also think the beat and the rhythm relates to the chapter two scene when Joseph shows off his skills in gym because it is more of an intense serious moment for Joseph and his peers. The beat and the rhythm of this song matches the theme of the scene, it makes you think seriously and intensity. This is why I think The Beast is a good song choice for the soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter. Listen to The Beast by clicking this link→https://www.youtube.com/watchv=3c2eZk1vBQc
My third song choice would have to be Sad Song by We The Kings. My reasoning behind the choice of this song is because it is a sad song, the lyrics match the purpose of the book nearly one hundred percent and the song has a reasoning behind it that matches what I think is the purpose of the book Orbiting Jupiter. This song “Sad Song” is a very sad song, the main features in the book Orbiting Jupiter are pretty well all sad. For example, in the lyrics it says “Without you, I feel broke like I'm half of a whole” just like how Joseph said he will never be able to fill the hole in his heart that Madeleine did for him! Some of the main lyrics I recognized that related to the novel were “Without you, I've got no hand to hold without you, I feel torn like a sail in a storm without you, I'm just a sad song” I think these lyrics relate to the novel Orbiting Jupiter when Joseph was describing his sad story about him and Madeleine to Jack and his parents in chapter four. When Joseph was practically saying that he was so depressed and he felt like he had nothing to live for once he had found out Madeleine had died after giving birth to Jupiter. Another reason I think the song Sad Song would be a good choice for the soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter is because the song’s lyrics are telling a story about a true love that has been broken up, it is a man telling his story about his true love and how it didn’t end up working out, just how I think the book Orbiting Jupiter is mainly about Joseph telling his love story between himself and Madeleine and how it didn’t work out because she had unfortunately passed on. That is how I believe that the song Sad Song would be a great choice for the soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter. Listen to Sad Song by clicking this link→https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZsXcc_tC
Overall those three songs Don’t Let Me Down, The Beast and Sad Song are all great choices for the soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter because of the reasoning that I have just given.
If you were to cast a movie for Orbiting Jupiter, which actors/actresses would you choose to play the lead roles and why?
If I were to cast a movie for Orbiting Jupiter, the actors/actresses I would choose would be, Mason Cook, Liam Hemsworth, Cameron Boyce and Leonardo DiCaprio. I would choose Mason Cook as Jack.
I would choose Mason Cook as Jack because he looks like and eighth grader. I would also choose Mason Cook to play the role as Jack because he could be one of those characters that is adventurous and "chill". With those labels I would put him as Jack because that is the type of kid you would think Jack is, layed back and just there for some fun. I know this because he was in the movie Spy Kids 4. In the movie Spy Kids 4 Mason Cook played one of the Spy Kids, they were adventurous and smart kids that were only twelve years old. Which matches the character of Jack.
For my second actor I would hire would be Cameron Boyce. I would choose Cameron Boyce to play the role of Joseph. I would choose him to play the role of Joseph because he was an actor in the show Jessie. He played the role of Luke, Luke was a rude, athletic and goofy eighth grader. I think he would play the role of Joseph perfectly because Joseph is very good in gym, he is known as a rude kid but on the inside he is a good person, just like Cameron Boyce playing the role of Luke in the show Jessie. So he'd be used to playing the role of a rude, closed and very athletic kid. Also Cameron Boyce looks exactly how the book described Joseph, dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.
My third actor to play a role in the movie Orbiting Jupiter would be Liam Hemsworth. I would choose Liam Hemsworth to play the role of the gym teacher Mr. Swieteck because Liam Hemsworth is a very athletic person. He is built with muscle, and he also plays in the Hunger Games. A movie that is pretty much based upon athletics, so he would be used to playing the role of a gym teacher. I also think Liam Hemsworth would be good acting the role of Mr. Swieteck because he is not easily impressed. It takes incredibility to impress Liam Hemsworth which is the same as Mr. Swieteck as in the book Jack says coach Swieteck is not easily impressed.
My fourth actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. I would choose Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of Joseph and Jack's geometry teacher Mr. D'ulney. I would choose Leonardo DiCaprio to be Mr. D'ulney because he is the role of a smart teacher, Leonardo DiCaprio is a very intelligent person so he would play well in that role. Also with Leonardo DiCaprio being an actor in this movie it would draw attention to the title, causing people to buy tickets for this movie due to the actors in it thinking it'll be great just because their favorite actors are playing a role in the movie.
All of those that I have just listed would be the ones chosen to play a role in my movie Orbiting Jupiter for those reasons.
¨As an audience member to Orbiting Jupiter how do you think Joseph's character has changed from chapter one to chapter two?¨
Personally I don't like Joseph's character in chapter one for many reasons ( No participation, Disrespect, Irresponsibility and Unkindness ) . I think Joseph has changed from chapter one to chapter two because he started to talk to his family and peers more often. In chapter two Joseph got involved in more school activities like gym because he was really good at it and he is starting to get comfortable to his new city, in chapter one Joseph wouldn't have got involved in any school activities or have talked to his peers and family because he didn't feel comfortable yet around his new home. Another change from chapter one to chapter two is Joseph's level of participation. In chapter one Joseph did not participate at all but Mr. D'ulney has been giving Joseph geometry and math question everyday in chapter two and is very impressed with how he comes up with his answers. Mr. D'ulney said "Maybe by the end of this year I will give some trigonometry questions!" Mr Swieteck was also very impressed with Joseph. Not with his math skills but his gym skills. Mr. Sweiteck said "Joseph, your better than any other grade 8 student I have ever had!" It was true! Joseph could do anything in gym class like it was the easiest thing anybody could ever do. He would even climb the rope in 38 seconds without using his legs. (Which is a pretty challenging thing to do for most people!). Joseph is also opening up to Jack, his foster brother, and the rest of his foster family including Rosie which is one of the family' cows. I think Joseph is opening up to his foster family because, hes telling them more about his life. He told Jack his daughter's name, Jupiter. Jack is the only one Joseph told his daughters name to! Jack is actually getting to know a lot more about Joseph. In my opinion It seems like Jack and Joseph are becoming best friends. This is why I think Joseph changed in the second chapter from the first chapter.
"Throughout the first part of chapter one, many people have preconceived notions about Joseph, from his new family, the bus driver and even the vice principals and teachers. Identify the labels that you think have been placed upon Joseph and how that effects the character in the book". Justify your answer with text evidence!!
I think the labels that have been placed upon Joseph is irresponsible, shy, unheard and worthless.
I think Joseph is labeled irresponsible because he has a child that is three months old and he hasn't even met her. He seems like the type of kid that takes his future life/education as a joke. A reason why his family would label him irresponsible is because he did not milk the cows when he was told to. Joseph might be labeled shy because, he hardly talks to anybody, at the beginning of the story when Joseph first met his family he never shook his new father's hand. He never let his new mother hug him and he went straight up into his new bunk bed without saying a word to his new brother. Joseph also tried to murder his teacher after accepting a very bad pill and swallowing it causing him to be sent to juvenile. I think Joseph would get labeled unheard because, nobody in this new area has heard his story about why he is so shy and irresponsible or why he doesn't like to have people touch him, or why he doesn't like people walking behind him, or why he will not eat canned peaches or does not like meatloaf etc. People are just labeling him right off the bat because they've heard things about him. I think Joseph would get labeled worthless by his peers because, he doesn't get involved in anything with anybody which draws attention away from him making other people think of him as a "nobody". People in the book are already making fun of him and calling him names. And he has a child that is 3 months old and he hasn't even seen her yet. To me that is just sad.
What did I learn during this assignment about creating an info graphic?
I learned the aspects of an info graphic you need to use to catch the audience. I also learned a lot of things about digital citizenship such as what does it mean to be a negative or positive digital citizen. I learned how to read what the advertiser is selling and find out which type of info graphic it is (Pathos, Logos, Ethos)
What is my target audience and does my info graphic do a good job of targeting them? How do
My target audience is adolescents and kids. I think I did a decent job of targeting my audience because, I used colour coordination using bright and positive colors, I found good interesting facts, I related most of my work on their everyday lives, and I put on some social media logos that would catch their eye.
Describe what kind of components/ images I used. And why did I use them?
I used colour coordination to appeal to my target audience. I also put on pictures of social media logos which they probably use every day so they would find it interesting to look at. I used interesting and fun facts that would make the viewer enjoy it more and I also used Pathos because I made them think about their choices in life (of social media).
How effective is my info graphic at conveying my message? Explain.
I think my info graphic is good at conveying my message. If I was a kid about 10 years old I would stop and read that any day. Why? Well the colour I used would grab my attention. I would have seen a logo from my favorite app/website and I would've stopped right away. I would enjoy to read it because it includes facts and information about my everyday life/everyday life choices.
